I.B. Ushakov is 70 years old.

October 28, 2024 marks the 70th birthday of Igor Borisovich Ushakov, Chief Researcher of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation – the Federal Medical Biophysical Center named after A.I. Burnazyan of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Major General of the Reserve Medical Service.

Igor Borisovich Ushakov was born in Tallinn (Estonian SSR). In 1971, he graduated from high school in Leningrad with a gold medal; in 1977, with honors, from the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. He continued his service at the State Research and Testing Institute of Aviation and Space Medicine of the USSR Ministry of Defense, where he rose from a junior researcher to deputy head of the institute for research work. In 1999–2009. was the head of the State Research and Testing Institute of Military Medicine of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in 2008-2015 – director of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation – the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 2016 – works at the State Research Center of the Russian Federation – Federal Medical and Biological Center named after A.I. Burnazyan of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia.

In 1982, I.B. Ushakov defended his candidate’s dissertation, in 1992 – his doctoral dissertation, devoted to the current problems of aviation radiobiology. In 1995 he became a professor, in 1999 he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, in 2003 – a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2005 – an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, in 2013 – an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Academician I.B. Ushakov is an outstanding Russian scientist, a specialist in the field of physiology of extreme impacts, aerospace, radiation and environmental medicine. He formed a new field of scientific knowledge – the ecology of humans in dangerous professions. The fundamental results of his scientific work, including: the concept of individual resistance and reactivity of animals and humans; physiological foundations of stress in life-threatening situations; methods for determining equivalent and effective levels of separate and combined extreme impacts at any time; methodology for modeling syndrome-similar states; cascade concept of psychophysiological risks in humans under conditions of separate and combined exposure to extreme factors; methods for extrapolating radiobiological effects – are of significant importance for disaster medicine. I.B. Ushakov is the author of more than 800 scientific papers, including over 50 monographs, manuals and books, he has received more than 70 patents. His scientific works were recognized by the USSR Council of Ministers Prize (1990), the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology (2005, 2011), the F.G. Krotkov Prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2000, 2004), the F.F. Erisman Prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2004), and the A.A. Ukhtomsky Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2024).

I.B. Ushakov is a participant in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Igor Borisovich is actively involved in training highly qualified scientific personnel: he has trained 26 doctors and 30 candidates of science; in 2005–2010, he headed the Department of Aviation and Space Medicine at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. Currently, I.B. Ushakov is a member of the expert council of the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for medical and preventive sciences, and works as a member of three dissertation councils.

I.B. Ushakov is a member of the Main Medical Commission for the examination of cosmonauts, the scientific and technical council of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, editorial boards and editorial boards of 18 peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the journal “Medicine of Disasters”. He heads the Radiobiological Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is a member of the bureau of the Section of Preventive Medicine of the Department of Medical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a member of the scientific councils of the Russian Academy of Sciences on space, global environmental issues, defense research and radiobiology.

For his great contribution to ensuring the country’s defense capability and the development of military science, I.B. Ushakov was awarded the Order “For Military Merit”, the medal “For the Rescue of the Perishing”, the Gratitude of the President of the Russian Federation and many medals. Igor Borisovich Ushakov was elected as an honorary professor of the Voronezh State Medical Academy named after N.N. Burdenko, and is an honorary member of many public academies and scientific societies.
