Abstract. The purpose of the research – on the basis of analysis and generalization of the data contained in official documents and scientific publications to give a general description of the system of organization of medical care and treatment of wounded and sick servicemen in evacuation hospitals of the USSR People’s Commissariat of Health and the way of its functioning during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

Materials and methods of research. The research materials were normative documents regulating the procedure of creating and operating of evacuation hospitals in the rear of the country during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and research papers and publications on the problem. When performing the research, the following methods were used – historical, content analysis, and analytical.

Research results and their analysis. Organizational issues of EH formation, their bed capacity, placement order, dislocation and relocation are considered.

The authors describe the management bodies of evacuation hospitals, the main tasks facing them, the contingents of hospitalized people, etc.
