Abstract. The purpose of the study is to analyze and generalize the results of research contained in scientific papers and publications, to identify the most typical causes that influenced the increase in the duration of treatment (stay) of wounded military personnel in the evacuation hospitals (EH) of the USSR People’s Commissariat of Health (PCH) during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

Materials and methods of research. Materials of the study were scientific works and publications, primarily of known scientists and doctors-organizers E.I.Smirnov, A.F.Tretiyakov, S.I.Milovidov, A.I.Zhichin, P.S.Barkhatov, I.B.Rostotskiy and others, who actively participated in the creation of a system of treatment of the wounded and sick soldiers in the evacuation hospitals of PCH and in the implementation of the order of its functioning, as well as reports on the activities of some evacuation hospitals. When performing the research, the following methods were used: historical, content analysis, and analytical.

Research results and their analysis. In examining the circumstances affecting the length of stay or treatment of the wounded in the EH of PCH were identified 3 major causes that contributed to the growth of this index: the first group of reasons is related to the level of organization and quality of medical diagnostic work carried out in the specific EH; the second group of reasons not related to medical care and treatment, i.e. time spent affecting the duration of stay of the wounded in the EH, due to the state of organizational and managerial (administrative) work in the evacuation hospital; the third group – reasons related to the level and quality of medical evacuation and organizational measures carried out at the previous stages of medical evacuation, as well as the activities of the entire system of evacuation hospitals and their management bodies.
